Tommy Nevins Pub has created a new "all ages" hot spot for contemporary jazz in Evanston. Presenting local act Jazz from Planet Flippo on alternate Sundays, the jazz quartet presents a mix of original compositions, arrangements and a few traditional jazz standards.

Their recent award-winning CD, "Life on Mars," features a collection of "jazzified" arrangements of rock and popular classics from the 60's/70's to the present, featuring tunes by artists such as David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Lennon-McCartney, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Cream, Joni Mitchell.  Other newer artists include Sublime, Sting, KT Turnstall and Amy Winehouse. Their arrangement of Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9" was selected for the Jazz Connects Jukebox Jury Award at this years national convention sponsored by Jazz Times Magazine.

The group also plays plenty of originals by pianist and leader Dave Flippo. The "book" includes past world-jazz fusion compositions as well of plenty of newer pieces exploring a variety of musical directions. Dave is a resident of Skokie, but has taught in the Evanston area for over twenty-five years. Flippo brings an interesting slant to his pieces as he blends his doctoral level training in composition with his other studies of jazz, popular and world music.

The only show in December will be on Sunday, December 11th from 3-6 pm.  Tommy Nevin's is located at 1450- Sherman Ave and offers up a wide selection of foods. This event is also free with no cover. Jazz from Planet Flippo hopes to build a diverse audience of adventurous listeners from all ages and develop and expand their music in this wonderful live forum.

The ensemble offers plenty of audio and video clips, pictures and background on their webpage at www.flippomusic.com
