Hecky's Barbecue, Donica Lynn from Dreamgirls and Pearl Cleage's acclaimed play, A Song for Corretta, are all part of the 3rd annual Juneteenth Jubilee benefitting the Forrest E. Powell Foundation which provides vocational scholarships for deserving seniors at Evanston Tonwship High School.
It's a full afternoon of food, music, socialability and community awareness. The Juneteenth Jubilee marks the anniversary of the first day that slaves in Texas received the news that they were now free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamations was signed.
The celebration on Sunday, June 12, kicks off with barbecue and sides by Hecky's, Donica Lynn, currently starring in Porchlight Theatre's Dreamgirls will entertain beginning at 1 p.m. Cleage's, A Song for Corretta in the Noyes Cultural Center.starts at 3 p.m. Event takes place at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes St., Evanston.
