D65 Math Matters, a group of parents that meets occasionally to discuss the mathematics curriculum of the Evanston/Skokie District 65 schools, is holding its Fall Parent Meeting tonight.

The group, which is not affiliated with District 65, will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p..m. at the Joseph E. Hill Education Center, 1500 McDaniel Ave.

The program will consist of a "conversation" with the district's superintendent, Paul Goren, and the district's STEM director, Jesch Reyes.

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math.

This is the second meeting of the group with the District 65 executives. The first meeting was held at the Evanston Public Library on July 7.

  1. How did the meeting go ?

    Anything important to report?

In addition to "Math Matters," which it does, maybe another group can start called, "Foreign Language Matters Too." Except for TWI, foreign languages don't start until 7th grade in District 65. Too late.

Why are only a small group of kids getting the benefit of foreign language instruction, while the majority of District 65 kids lag in this increasingly important area?

    1. It depends on the school

It depends on the school the kids are in. At Bessie Rhodes my child has had Chinese taught to her from 1st to 3rd grade as part of the curriculum; believe Spanish is taught in higher grades.

      1. Some children, every day, whatever it takes

Not every kid can get into Bessie Rhodes just like not every kid can get into TWI even those attending the few Evanston schools that offer TWI.

The D65 motto is "Every child, every day, whatever it takes." That doesn't apply to foreign language since only a privileged few receive foreign language instruction at D65.

Wilmette elementary schools offer ALL of their students foreign language instruction, including Chinese. No wonder WIlmette and Winnetka are always in high demand for folks with kids.

You and your kids get what you vote for.
