Producemobile delivers freshness

Producemobile is scheduled to come to Evanston from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Robert Crown Center parking lot at 1701 Main Street. Producemobile continues to distribute free fresh fruits and vegetables on a first-come, first-served basis every second Tuesday of the month. The Producemobile is co-sponsored by Interfaith Action of Evanston and the City of Evanston.

This month, Connections will have a health care navigator on site to enroll people under the Affordable Care Act.

Since December 2012, the Evanston Producemobile has distributed over 100,000 pounds of food to 3,000 households, which represents over 1,200 individuals served each month. Many of these individuals live in areas where produce is costly or difficult to obtain. The Food Depository targeted Evanston as a high-need area, as nearly 14% of the city's population is food-insecure, meaning that they don't know where their next meal is coming from.

The program's success is dependent on maintaining a team of active volunteers. About 35 volunteers will be needed each month to unload, bag and distribute the produce at Robert Crown Center.
