Tom Mula performs Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol

DECEMBER 9 – 10, 2017

Multiple award-winning actor, playwright, director and Chicagoland favorite Tom Mula will perform a solo staged reading of his holiday classic Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol at Studio5 Performing Arts Center, December 9th – 10th. Inspired by Dickens, Mula’s heart-warming and funny, original story takes the perspective of Scrooge’s former business partner, Marley.

Mula portrayed Scrooge in the Goodman Theatre’s production of their adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for seven years. A young audience member inspired him after a performance one night when she said she thought Jacob Marley got a bad deal: Marley came back as a tormented ghost to tell Scrooge to change his ways to avoid his own fate, but Marley himself had no chance at redemption. With that, the idea was planted in Tom’s head.

In addition to being an actor and director, Tom is also an author and a playwright. Once he crafted Marley’s story, it was a critical smash and has had many lives: Tom’s recording of his reading of the novel was broadcast nationally on National Public Radio for six years. Tom has performed the story across the country (including at the Goodman Theatre) as a one-man play, and he has also re-written it for the stage for larger ensembles. All told, his Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol has had over 400 productions, in 48 states, on four continents.

Tom Mula’s Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol runs two performances only, Saturday, December 9th at 8:00 PM, and Sunday, December 10th at 3:00 PM (doors open 30 minutes before curtain) at Studio5 Performing Arts Center (adjacent to Dance Center Evanston), 1934 W. Dempster, Evanston 60202 in the Evanston Plaza. Tickets are priced at $20-25 (students, $15-20), and are available online (https://studio5-mula.bpt.me/) for reserved seating, or at the door. Appropriate for ages 12+. Cash bar, light snacks, and free parking right outside.
