Preliminary plans submitted to the City of Evanston in recent weeks call for building a nine-story addition to The Link apartment development at 811 Emerson St. on the north edge of downtown.
The addition would be built to the north of the existing building, on property at 816 Garnett Place that currently contains a surface parking lot for residents of the Sherman Gardens co-op complex.
Under the plans, in exchange for their existing parking lot, the Sherman Gardens owners would get a new two-story parking garage with 96 spaces built on property at 824 Emerson St. that now houses a drive-thru for Byline Bank.
The plans for the new apartment building from Focus Development, which built The Link, call for it to have 200 dwelling units and 71 parking spaces as well as a connection to the existing building.
Both the new apartment building and the parking garage proposals have been labeled “non-compliant” by city staff, and the city is waiting to receive revisions from the applicant before taking any further action on the proposals.
