As a result of continuing road closures that affect both campus entrances, Oakton Community College’s Des Plaines campus will remain closed for classes and all activities on Wednesday.

The Skokie campus—including the college’s enrollment and testing centers—is scheduled to be open, and continuing education classes at high schools will meet based on if those locations are open.

“The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has indicated that both Central and Golf Roads will remain closed due to the high water levels, which make them impassable to traffic,” said Oakton Vice President Edwin Chandrasekar. “The college is continuing to work closely with IDOT to determine when the roads will reopen.”

Severe thunderstorms last Thursday caused the Des Plaines River, which flows through the campus, to overflow its banks.

The school is closed Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during the summer. But it’s been closed since last Thursday because of the high water levels.

College spokesman Paul Palian says the timing of the closure is difficult, with final exams scheduled next week. “At this point, there are no changes to that schedule. We are keeping student needs at the forefront of our discussions moving forward,” Palian says.

The college advises students, employees and visitors to visit Oakton’s website for updates.
