The old Barnes & Noble bookstore in downtown Evanston came back to life on Monday, not as a bookstore, but as a medical facility.

Northwestern Medicine opened its new immediate care facility on Sherman Avenue. Staff at the center say it is replacing Northwestern’s previous facility at 1704 Maple Ave.

The bookstore closed last year, leaving a large empty building in the heart of downtown, but Northwestern Medicine quickly stepped in to take over the location.

The immediate care location offers treatment and evaluation for minor illnesses and injuries. There are also doctors’ offices in addition to walk-in services.

The Sherman Avenue facility is also open to Northwestern University students as part of student health care. Earlier this month, Northwestern University Health Services Clinic and Sports Medicine became part of Northwestern Medicine.

The old student health building in Searle Hall remains open as well.
