Northwestern Memorial HealthCare will open an office in Evanston this fall in part of the former Borders bookstore space at 1700 Maple Ave.

The health care organization is affiliated with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

The location in Evanston is one of six physician offices Northwestern Memorial plans to open in in Chicago and the north suburbs this year.

Others will be in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood and in Highland Park, Glenview, Grayslake and Deerfield. They will join offices opened in Grayslake and on the Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital campus last year.

The new offices will provide competition for Evanston-based NorthShore University HealthSystem, which long had been affiliated with Feinberg before switching its med-school connection to the University of Chicago a few years ago.

NorthShore has an office just across the street from the new 1700 Maple Ave. site in the 909 Davis building.

Northwestern Memorial says it eventually plans to have about 100 new primary care physicians and approximately 20 specialists from Northwestern Memorial Physician Group and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation in six new locations.

All of the physicians will have faculty appointments at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

The expansion “broadens access to the quality primary and specialty care that patients trust and that Northwestern is so widely known for,” Daniel Derman, MD, president, Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group and vice president, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said in a statement..

Beyond its primary care role, the Evanston office will also include orthopaedics services.

The new office in Evanston is scheduled to open in November.
