Northwestern University officials announced this morning that they’ve cancelled all school-sponsored spring break trips for students to international destinations because of concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus.

In a statement, the school said it “was a difficult decison made in consultation with numerous campus stakeholders.”

The school said students scheduled to go on the trips would receive specific guidance on next steps from their trip leader or unit or department sponsor.

The school also said it would prefer that employees defer any nonessential international travel and that they should seek approval from a vice president or dean if it’s deemed essential.

The statement also said that all university-related travel to China, Iran, Italy and South Korea is prohibited.

Update 3/4/20 3:55 p.m.: The school this afternoon announced that the annual Dance Marathon event scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled because of concerns about the disease.
