Due to ongoing road closures that affect both campus entrances, Oakton Community College’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road, will remain closed for classes and all activities today.

The Skokie campus—including the college’s enrollment and testing centers—is scheduled to be open, and continuing education classes at high schools will meet if the specific location is open.

“Unfortunately, the river waters are receding slowly, and both Golf Road and Central Road remain closed, so there is no way to safely access the campus,” said Oakton President Joianne L. Smith. “We are closely monitoring the situation and will reopen as soon as it is safe for us to do so.”

Smith said in a letter to students that the college does not plan to extend the semester, noting that some classes have been rescheduled to the college’s Skokie campus, and many other instructors are using online learning platforms to communicate with students.

“We will continue to work with students and faculty to ensure that students are able to complete the semester and have a quality learning experience,” she said. “Oakton is a resilient community. While the flood is certainly a challenge, we will not let it stand in the way of helping students reach their academic goals.”

Oakton’s Des Plaines campus originally closed Thursday, July 13, and was closed the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday as per its normal summer operating schedule. The closure today marks the fifth straight business day the college has been closed.

The college advises students, employees and visitors to visit Oakton’s website for updates.
