A dusting of lake effect snow fell on Evanston starting about 2 a.m. this morning — leaving about a quarter inch on the ground by shortly after dawn.

Assistant Public Works Director James Maiworm says the snow mostly coated grassy areas and sidewalks.

The overnight public works crew had been alerted to the potential for lake effect, Maiworm says, and the main roads have been treated as a precaution against freeze back. Public Works crews are checking side streets this morning, he says, for any additional slippery spots.

Today should turn out to be mostly sunny but cold. Warming temperatures are expected next week.
