Two gunmen on bicycles shot two men in the 1800 block of Dodge Avenue in Evanston early this morning — leaving one victim dead, the other hospitalized.

Evanston police say the incident happened abot 1:20 this morning.

Donte Blackwell, 23, of Niles, was shot once in the torso as he stood near the sidewalk on Dodge just north of Lyons Street. He was pronounced dead at Evanston Hospital.

The second victim, a 21-year-old Evanston man, was shot in the arm and leg. He’s undergoing treatment at Evanston Hospital for what police say are considered to be non-life threatening injuries.

Police say witnesses told them that the assailants fled northbound on Dodge Avenue.

The Evanston Police Department detective division with the assistance of the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force (NORTAF) are investigating the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Evanston Police Department at (847) 866-5000 or use Text-A-Tip anonymously by texting the information to CRIMES (274637) and entering EPDTIP in the message line with the tip information.

The homicide victim was well-known to police, having been arrested in 2011 and 2012 on aggravated assault charges as well as on a number of other occasions for lesser offenses.

He also had been shot multiple times on Dec. 8, 2012, outside the since-closed Siblings Bar at 2827 W. Howard in Chicago.

Update 9:47 a.m.: At this hour police still have Dodge Avenue blocked to vehicle traffic, including CTA buses, from Church Street north to Emerson Street. Traffic is being diverted onto Darrow Street, one block east, instead.
