Owners balk at downtown plan

Owners of some buildings set to be included in the downtown plan’s low-rise "traditional" zones aren’t happy about the designation.

Alderman Steve Bernstein, 4th Ward, says some of his constituents who own property in the 1000 block of Davis Street are objecting to the idea of being blocked from redeveloping their properties with more intense uses, while high-rise buildings would be allowed just across an alley from them.

So the aldermen have scheduled a special meeting of the Planning and Development Committee for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, to hear concerns from property owners in the three traditional districts.

Those districts are:

  • Along Davis Street west of the Metra tracks
  • On Sherman Avenue north of Church Street
  • In the 600 block of Davis Street and the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Sherman Avenue.
