Evanston police say a Chicago man in his 60s was killed by a hit-and-run driver at Howard Street and Chicago Avenue about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Cmdr. Ryan Glew says the driver later surrendered to Chicago Police.

In a separate incident, a pedestrian was in critical condition early this morning after being hit by a car at Dempster Street and Chicago Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Glew says the driver in that incident remained at the scene and was not arrested.

Update 9:50 a.m.: Glew says the victim in the Howard Street crash was in the east crosswalk at Howard and Chicago when he was hit. The victim, 66, was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he died of his injuries.

The driver in that crash turned himself in at the 24th District police station in Chicago. Charges against him are pending further investigation by the Major Crash Assistance Team.

Glew says the victim in the accident near Dempster Street was crossing between parked vehicles at 1310 Chicago Ave. when he was hit.

The 30-year-old Libertyville resident is now in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Evanston Hospital. That accident is also being investigated by MCAT. The driver was released at the scene.
