Pizza man carjacked in south Evanston

Neighbors say a pizza delivery man was beaten and robbed and his car was stolen Tuesday evening in Evanston’s 8th Ward.

The incident reportedly happened as the man was making a delivery to the courtyard apartment building at 142-148 Clyde Ave.

According to neighbors’ accounts posted on the 8th Ward message board, after taking the guy’s money, the two robbers, who’d earlier been seen lurking about the Clyde-Brummel park, hopped into his car, which was already running, and drove backwards down Clyde to Brummel Street.

The delivery man tried to stop them and was briefly caught in his car’s door but managed to break free about the time the robbers struck a parked truck.

They then continued to flee, reportedly driving the wrong way up Case Street almost to Ridge Avenue where another witness tells Evanston Now that the car struck a tree and stalled out.

One of the robbers reportedly was taken into custody there by a police unit that had already been in the area, but the other fled.

And while fire paramedics went to assist the injured delivery man, the car burst into flames, which required other fire units to respond to put out the blaze.

As police searched for the second robber, power to the nearby CTA Yellow Line tracks was cut off to reduce the risk to officers conducting the search.

A second suspect in the incident reportedly was eventually taken into custody in the 1000 block of Case.

We’re awaiting a call-back from a police spokesman to get details about what charges, if any, have been filed against the two men taken into custody.
