Pizza shop to open with social-media freebie

Blaze Pizza's new outlet in Evanston is opening this week and will offer a free pizza Friday anyone who follows the chain on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

The Los Angeles-based chain is heavy on the social media concept, posting photos submitted by customers to its website — including some, like the one above, that you might wonder about.

The fast casual chain is opening at 1737 Sherman Ave. downtown on Thursday and plans the free pizza deal from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday.

The restaurants feature what the chain calls "an interactive assembly-line format" so guests can customize one of the menu's signature pizzas or create their own, choosing from a wide selection of fresh ingredients — all for under $8.

The 11-inch pizzas are then sent to a blazing hot open-flame oven — the centerpiece of the restaurant — and the thin-crust pies are ready to eat in just three minutes.

"Blaze Pizza delivers a customized pizza experience with the artisanal quality that Chicagoans have come to expect, but now without the wait," said Larry Levy, founder of Levy Family Partners, the group developing Blaze Pizza in Chicago.
