Police say they believe a string of home burglaries may have been cleared with the arrest of an Evanston man.

Cmdr. Jay Parrott says tactical unit officers on a burglary prevention assignment responded to a burglary in progress call in the 800 block of Grey Avenue about 6 p.m. Thursday.

Although the homeowners were out of town, Parrott says the officers found a witness who reported seeing a man break a window in the home and then flee on foot from the scene.

Officers then spotted a suspect, who the witness identified as the would-be-burglar.

The suspect, identified as Bobby L. Witherspoon, 42, of 1800 Main St., was charged with criminal damage to property and is due to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Feb. 7.

Witherspoon was also being sought by Area 5 Chicago Police detectives for a burglary in their area and he’s been charged with burglary in connection with that investigation.

Parrott says that officers believe Witherspoon may have been responsible for several other burglaries in Evanston, but no further charges have been filed so far.
