Evanston Police say an officer responding to a call of a man checking the handles of car doors in the 1100 block of Elmwood Avenue just after midnight today spotted a man rummaging through a car parked on the street.

Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says when the man saw the officer he tried to flee on foot but was apprehended three-quarters-of-a-mile away at the intersection of Crain and Darrow.

Nothing was taken from the vehicle, but the suspect, Dugan says, later admitted to entering the vehicle in order to remove property.

The man, Jimmy Palomo, 22 of 1406 Chicago Ave., was charged with one count of burglary to vehicle and is to appear in Skokie district court.
