Evanston police now say they’ve canceled an alert issued earlier today regarding an incident near Oakton School.

In that incident a female student at the school told officers she was grabbed by a woman at a bus stop near the school Tuesday morning.

After the alert appeared on Evanston Now a Evanston woman contacted police and said she was the person described in the bulletin.

She said she’d seen the youngster crossing the street against traffic and was attempting to get get the child’s name so she could report the incident to the school’s principal.

Police Commander James Elliot says that while officers are continuing to investigate the incident there is no indication at this point that the woman had any intent to harm the child or lure her to another location.

He said, “the subject has a past association with the school and the incident may have revolved around a misguided attempt to provide safety instructions to the victim.”

Elliott added that the individual “is not in custody at this time and any potential charges will be determined once the investigation is completed.”
