Evanston police say officers on routine patrol early this morning spotted a man acting suspiciously inside a parked car in the 1300 block of Ashland Avenue.

Cmdr. Tom Guenther says that as officers approached the car at 2:24 a.m. they noticed it had been ransacked and saw the suspect discard a GPS device.

When questioned by police, the suspect claimed to be a relative of the car’s owner, Guenther said. But when officers contacted the owner, they learned that wasn’t true.

Police say they also found the suspect had a large amont of change taken from the vehicle.

The suspect, identified as Dametre Jermal Irby, 19, of 1317 Argonne in North Chicago, has been charged with one felony count of burglary to a motor vehicle and is due in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Aug. 25.
