Police say they’ve charged an Evanston man with reckless discharge of a firearm after he allegedly shot himself in the leg Friday night.
Cmdr. Jay Parrott says officers were called to the 1700 block of Lyons Street shortly after 10 p.m. where they found a 19-year-old man who told them he’d been wounded by someone he couldn’t identify who’d fired several shots at him, one of which hit him in the right leg.
But Parrott says Deshawn Joseph Thomas later admitted that he’d been carrying a .32 caliber handgun in his waistband and that he was wounded when his own gun discharged.
Thomas was treated at Evanston Hospital. He faces a possible sentence of one to three years if convicted of the charge.
Parrott says Thomas earlier this year was convicted of mob action after another incident in the city.
He’s scheduled to appear in Skokie district court at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
