Evanston police are seeking more information about an incident Saturday afternoon in which a man tried to lure a child into his car near the intersection of Main Street and Michigan Avenue.

Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says the child, a 12-year-old-girl, was walking in the 200 block of Main about 1:40 p.m. Saturday when a man in a white sports utility vehicle pulled up and asked her about the location of a coffee shop in the area.

The man asked the girl to show him where the business was located, got out of his car, opened the passenger door and asked her to get inside. When the child refused and backed away, he got back into his SUV and was last see driving eastbound on Main Street.

The man is described as being Hispanic, 20-30 years of age, short in stature, with a goatee. The vehicle is described as a newer white sports utility vehicle, possibly a Chevy Traverse. During their conversation, the male identified himself as Jose.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Evanston Police Department at 847-866-5000 or use Text-A-Tip to text the information to CRIMES (274637), entering EPDTIP in the message line along with the information.
