Evanston police say they’re investigating an early morning shooting that left a Chicago man fatally wounded behind a house in the 1700 block of Grey Avenue.

Police say they received a phone call about 12:20 a.m. reported that a man had been shot in the street in that block.

When police arrived, they found the victim, identified as Helder M. Torres, 21, of 4923 N. Whipple in Chicago, unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound.

Fire department paramedics treated him at the scene and transported him to Evanston Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Evanston police detectives and the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force spent the day interviewing witnesses and processing the crime scene.

Police Commander Tom Guenther says no one is in custody and that anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at 847-866-5000.
