Evanston police report they’re making progress in their investigation of the fatal shooting a week ago of 20-year-old Yakez Semark.

Deputy Police Chief Aretha Barnes told residents at a 5th Ward meeting Thursday night that police had executed a search warrant on Emerson Street earlier Thursday in connection with the murder investigation.

She also said it appears the crime is not gang-related and that Semark and his killer knew each other.

Semark, 20, a Chicago resident who was a 2015 graduate of Evanston Township High School, was shot to death about 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, in the 1800 block of Hovland Court.

Funeral services for Semark are scheduled for Saturday morning at Christ Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Evanston.
