Evanston police say they’ve arrested a man who was caught on tape stealing a bike from an apartment building in the 2000 block of Sherman Avenue.

Police Commander Tom Guenther says that the man took parts of two bikes to assemble one that he then rode off on about 2 p.m. last Tuesday.

The next day, officers on patrol downtown noticed a man who looked like the man on the tape. As they were following him, a resident told the officers the man had tried to sell him the bike he was riding for $20.

The officers stopped the suspect for riding his bike on the downtown sidewalk, in violation of a city ordinance. While searching him, the officers say they discovered he was carrying suspected drug paraphernalia.

The man, Robert D. Graham, 49, of 69 E. 101st Place in Chicago, now faces charges of criminal trespass, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and riding a bike on the sidewalk. He’s scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on Oct. 1.
