Evanston police issued an alert late Monday afternoon about an attempted assault that occurred over the weekend in the 1300 block of Maple Avenue.

An unidentified male approached a 23-year-old female resident on Saturday night just after midnight and knocked her to the ground, according to Cmdr. Jay Parrott.

While the victim was being attacked, he said, the offender attempted to undress her. When the victim resisted, she was further battered by her attacker.

She was subsequently treated for facial injuries at a local hospital.

Update 8 p.m. 12/9/13: Northwestern University police now have identified the victim as an NU student.

The attacker was described as a fair-skinnned male, about 5-feet-7 or 8-inches tall, of slim build, wearing blue jeans, a dark coat, and a possible knit cap.

He was seen just before the attack walking eastbound on Dempster Street approaching Maple Avenue.

No other incidents of this type have recently been reported to police, Parrott said. Police are asking anyone with information to call them at (847) 866-5000 or to text to CRIMES (274637) and typing EPD Tip with the anonymous tip information.
