A franchise of what’s billed as the largest retailer of popcorn in the world plans to open next to the Cold Stone Cremery on Sherman Avenue in Evanston.
A city report says the Doc Popcorn shop is seeking a special use permit to open in the former Diadem Jewelers location at 1613 Sherman Ave.
The proposal is scheduled to be reviewed by the Zoning Board of Appeals at a meeting on Sept. 2.
The company’s nearest existing locations are at the Des Plaines and Lake Forest tollway oases and at the Gurnee Mills mall.
Did we have one before ?
I thought there was such a store on Sherman less than 10 years ago.
I hope the new store learned whatever lessons there were.
It is hard to keep track of all the stores we have HAD on Sherman.
Yes, We Did
Gary Poppins Popcorn had a retail shop up by the Taco Bell on Sherman. I don't remember when it was open, but it was a delicious product.
Popcorn paradise
A popcorn shop? I recall there was a store that specialized in cereals, Cereality, in Sherman Plaza. Cereality got tons of publicity but closed down in 2007 after about six months of operation.
It reminded of an old Saturday Night live sketch of a mall store that sells only Scotch tape.
As long as the city doesn't give money to this popcorn store like it has to so many other businesses I'm good and I hope it survives.
Rest-stop snack food – ick
Crain's Chicago Business asks When did Evanston get hip?, then we get news that a rest-stop snack food operator is opening in Evanston. I guess we have to take the good with the salty-buttered-caramel-coated bad.
