Update 11:18 a.m.: A power failure hit portions of Evanston about 10:45 this morning. Traffic lights were reported out across much of the downtown area, and there several reports of people trapped in stalled elevators.

Power to at least some portions of the affected area was restored by about 11:04 a.m., but a Com Ed recorded message said it could be 1:30 p.m. before power is restored to other areas.

Buildings with reports of people stuck in elevators included the Sherman Plaza complex as well as the 1007 Church St. office building at at the Civic Center at 2100 Ridge Ave., but it appears those people were rescued without incident within a short period of time.

A Com Ed spokesman said shortly after 11 a.m. that crews were enroute to the scene and they don’t yet know what the cause of the outage is.

The spokesman said about 2,300 customer accounts were affected by the outage.
