Power is out to a section of Evanston near the intersection of Dempster Street and Ridge Avenue at this hour after a squirrel made the fatal mistake of gnawing on power lines there.

Traffic signals are out at several locations along Ridge Avenue and nearby streets.

Reportedly 2,300 customers are affected by the outage in the area from Greenwood Street south to South Boulevard and from Lake Shore Boulevard west to Ridge Avenue.

Lights reportedly also flickered at the Civic Center and in other parts of town about the same, shortly before 10 a.m., but did not go out.

ComEd has been notified, but there’s no word yet on when power may be restored.

Update 11:45 a.m.: ComEd reports power restored to all but a handful of customers by shortly before noon.
