[VIDEO] 5th Ward aldermanic candidates say they see a role for preservation in helping improve Evanston’s west side.

In response to a question at a candidate forum Saturday, Alderman Delores Holmes said she believes efforts should be made to landmark a home at 2009 Dodge Ave. once visited by Abraham Lincoln.

And she and challenger Adrian Dortch agreed that steps should be taken to upgrade and preserve the former Foster School that once served the city’s black community.

The school now is the Weissbourd-Holmes Family Focus center.

Dortch also said the city’s Civic Center should be preserved, but he said he doesn’t believe the city needs to spend $2 million to replace the building’s roof.
