Evanston City Clerk Rodney Greene announced today that there will be a primary election for mayor and 5th Ward alderman in February.

The primary is called for under state law, Greene said, because each of those contests has five candidates seeking election.

The primary, on Feb. 28, will winnow the field in each race to two candidates, unless one candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote. In that case, the primary result would be final and the contest wouldn’t appear on the April 4 general election ballot.

All the other muncipal contests will only appear on the April election ballot.

The candidates for mayor are Gary Gaspard, Steve Hagerty, Brian Miller, Jeffery P. Smith and Mark Tendam.

The candidates for 5th Ward alderman are Daniel Featherson, Carolyn Murray, Robin Rue, Carlis Sutton and Misty Witenberg.
