  1. A hybrid vehicle would not have to cost TWICE as much

At tonights Admin and Public Work meeting, a new vehicle was approved for the Fire Department command staff and it is costing taxpayers $25K.  According to Bill’s account:

    • Fire Department … new vehicle for command staff. $25K from Currie Motors of Frankfort, IL approved. Staff says hybrid vehicle would cost twice as much.

Excuse me, but a Toyota Prius – a hybrid vehicle – costs about $25K.  I imagine that they need some big, brawny vehicle with 4 wheel drive for all of the rugged driving this commander has to do because of our poorly maintained streets and unpaved alleys!  (Although, for $25K it couldn’t be too loaded with extras.)  But, regarding the hybrid question, why would the alderman accept an answer like that when it is so obvious that just isn’t true.  I, for one, would like to see some of our commander types driving something like a Prius – or, if we want to buy American, and need an SUV, then buy a Ford Escape Hybrid.  According to Ford’s website, any Joe can buy a 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid SUV starting at $29,850.  I imagine that using some collective municipal pricing, we could even do better on that price.

This is the sort of stuff that makes you believe the stories about government and their $700 toilet seats.  Aren’t we supposed to be working towards being more green and reducing our carbon footprint?  Seems like the alderman are not keeping their green promises to the citizens in this City.  It is a small item, but very dissappointing that they can’t even stick to this one goal.
