Ready to take down the holiday decorations? Here are some options for what to do with items you no longer want.
Holiday string lighting and extension cords can be recycled at three locations in Evanston through Jan. 31.
Lights can be dropped off at the Levy Center, Ecology Center and the main Evanston Public Library.
They’ll be recycled by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County and Elgin Recycling.
Garlands, live greens and wreaths are not accepted for that program.
But your Christmas tree can just be placed on the parkway, between the street and the curb, and it will be picked up and turned into mulch by the city on the same day of the week as your other trash collections.
Trees won’t be picked up from alleys or private property. And you should remove all lights and decorations from the tree and not put the tree in a plastic bag — because that stuff can damage the mulching equipment. Christmas tree pickups will continue through Feb. 1.
