Evanston police took a robbery suspect into custody on a southbound Red Line train this noon as the train stood just outside the Thorndale station on Chicago’s north side.

Police Cmdr. Tom Guenther say a man entered Robby’s Communication at 333 Howard St about 11:30 a.m., implied he had a gun, ordered the female clerk to open the cash drawer and then ordered her into the store’s restroom while he cleaned out the register.

Guenther says the man then fled from the store and was seen by witnesses boarding the southbound train at the Howard Street station.

Working in cooperation with Chicago police and CTA officials, officers arranged to have the train stopped just short of the Thorndale station, boarded it and seized the suspect, who was later identified by the robbery victim.

Update 10:57 a.m. 2/16/11: Evanston police say the suspect, Danny Wicker, 41, of 2054 E. 69th St. # 2B in Chicago, now has been charged with one felony county of aggravated robbery.

He’s scheduled to appear on Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Skokie district court.
