A pickup truck and two sedans were involved in a rollover accident in Evanston early this morning.

The accident occurred in the 900 block of Asbury Avenue. The pickup truck ended up resting against a tree.

Fire crews responding to the scene had to extinguish a blaze after the engine compartment of one of the cars caught fire.

Ryan Garton of 914 Asbury Ave., the owner of the pickup truck, says he was asleep in his home when he heard the crash about 3:45 a.m.

He ran out and saw one of the sedans, a black VW Passat, on fire.

Update 3:56 p.m.: Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says the driver of the car that caught fire fled the scene but was found by police about a half hour later in the alley east of the 900 block of Asbury, hiding behind garbage cans.

Dugan says the driver, a 25-year-old Skokie resident, was suffering from numerous injuries but was coherent when found by police. He was transported by a Fire Department ambulance to St. Francis Hospital.

Dugan says he’s expected to face under the influence of alcohol and other charges.

Garton says his truck is a total loss. The second parked vehicle damaged in the crash, Garton says, was a Toyota Venza.

Asbury Avenue remained closed to traffic for nearly three hours after the wreck.
