Evanston Alderman Judy Fiske, 1st Ward, has declined to participate in at least two campaign events where she’d have to face her challenger in her re-election race, Ed Tivador.

Fiske, invited Feb. 1 along with all other aldemanic candidates to participate in a special edition of “The Reporters” planned for taping March 6, sent the reporters involved an email late the night before the taping saying, “I have a major campaign event that had to be rescheduled once and cannot be rescheduled again. Please pass along my regrets to all the participants.”

Fiske has also declined to appear at a candidate forum planned by the League of Women Voters of Evanston. Under league rules, that forced the group to cancel its planned forum for 1st Ward voters.

Fiske didn’t respond to an email from Evanston Now asking for information about the event that created the schedule conflict with the March 6 taping or to explain why she’d declined to participate in the planned LWV forum.

She and Tivador are, at this point, still scheduled to meet face-to-face Thursday evening at a forum on campus sponsored by Northwestern University’s Associated Student Government. It appears that will be their only joint appearance of the campaign.

  1. What is the problem?

I don't understand why Alderman Fiske would avoid doing these debates. The voters have the right to hear her discuss her record and debate various issues in at least a pair of forums. Since she is not participating in these debates, this says to me that she is hiding or ashamed of something. This may not be true, given the progress that commercial has made downtown, but turning down a competitor's debate and going radio silent speaks volumes. For her, she needs to be sure that this is the message she wants to send. Until then, I am going to give Tivador a serious look.
