U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston has a crushing lead in campaign fundraising over her Republican challenger, Tim Wolfe of Des Plaines.

Schakowsky, generally rated as one of the most liberal members of Congress, has raised nearly $1.1 million for her campaign as of the last federal campaign finance reporting deadline.

By comparison, Wolfe had raised a paltry $21,000 at the same point, and his campaign was several thousand dollars in debt.

The candidates have two more campaign finance reporting deadlines before the election. The next one is Oct. 15.

In the last election cycle, Schakowsky raised a total of $1.5 million, compared to $677,000 raised by her Republican challenger, Joel Pollak, who ended up with 31 percent of the vote in the general election.

Schakowsky’s 66 percent vote total in 2010 was her weakest finish to date in her eight races for Congress. She’s otherwise won with 70 to 76 percent of the votes cast.

Redistricting has changed the composiion of the 9th District for this year’s election, adding more suburban voters, many of whom have somewhat more conservative views than the typical voter in the old 9th District.

But with the redistricting map drawn by Democrats, observers don’t believe it creates any insurmountable challenge for the incumbent.

  1. Why is this a story

Why is this a story? Jan is an extremely far left liberal in a extremely far left district. Both. are way out of the American mainstream.

In 2010, she had her closest election because her opponent was so much more qualified than her. She was humiliated in their one an only debate. She refused more debates. Leading upto the election, she held a fake health care town meeting where she ushered hundreds of union backers into the back doormof Niles West while only about 100 of the 400 – 500 waiting in line for hours were able to get in.

I have heard that even if she were a convicted murder she could get re-elected in this district.

  2. What happens when Dems play around with borders…

I have heard Jan Shakowsky many times on Don and Roman (WLS 890 a.m.) and she never has her facts straight. I have heard Don challenge her with irrefutable statistics which she then claims are "wrong." I have no idea why the affluent people on the North Shore  would support this woman when she views them as "evil" (despite being quite rich herself). For all you Dems who support redistricting: Illinois is going down the tubes fast, and you can only blame yourselves.
