Evanston police say officers responding to a disturbance call late Tuesday night recovered a handgun and arrested the man they say threw it into some bushes.

Officer Arron Wernick says he saw a man running along the bike path in the 900 block of McDaniel Avenue. After shining has squad car spotlight on the man, he says he observed him make a throwing motion with his right arm, apparently tossing something into the forested area along the North Shore Channel.

Police say the man, identified as Kelvin Jay Nails Jr., 23, of 809 Mansfield in Schaumburg, refused the officer’s commands to halt, but Wernick, with help from three other officers, managed to capture him after a foot chase.

Officers later recovered a Pietro Beretta Model 92 9mm handgun from the area where they say Nails had made the throwing motion.

Nails now is scheduled to appear in Skokie district court on Aug. 1 on eight counts of felony unlawful use of a weapon.
