Schools: Kids chess tournament planned

A chess tournament open to all Evanston kindergarten through 8th grade students will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Lincoln Elementary School, 910 Forest Ave.

Player check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., with the first round starting at 9:30 a.m..

The tournament is open to all students in the age group who either live in Evanston or attend school in Evanston.

The tournament is open to all students in the age group who either live in Evanston or attend school in Evanston.

Players should know how to move all pieces, be able to play a whole game and know how to checkmate an opponent.Check with your chess coach for clarification. The price to play is $4 per player. More information is available online.

Haven Middle School
The Haven School PTSA monthly meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5. Faculty, staff, and families of the school are invited to participate. For more information, call 847-859-8200.

Oakton Elementary School
akton School’s Family Friday Home and School Connection program meets at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The program promotes parental involvement through literacy with a special invitation to the kindergarten families whose children are participating in the K-LEAP literacy outreach program made possible with support from Foundation 65 and the Evanston Public Library.

Orrington Elementary School
Orrington School PTA holds its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Faculty, staff, and families of the school are invited to participate. For more information, call 847 859-8780.

Willard Elementary School
The Willard School Parent Advisory/Information meeting takes place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10. “What’s the buzz about Assessments?” is the topic of the meeting led by Willard School teachers to learn more about how teachers assess learning.

Willard school families are invited to learn what the acronyms: ISEL, DRA/EDL, MAP, and ISAT are, and also to talk about how teachers use end-of-unit tests and anecdotal data to help assess and monitor learning.
