Schools news: Pancakes and sports

A pancake breakfast and a sporting event designed to encourage health lifestyles are among the activities coming up this month at Evanston schools.

Haven Middle School
Haven Middle School’s Booster Club hosts its 14th annual pancake breakfast Saturday, Oct. 24, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the school at 2417 Prairie Ave.

In addition to all-you-can-eat pancakes for $7 (under 3 eat free), the Haven symphonic (7th & 8th grades) and concert bands (6th grade) will play at 8:10 a.m. and 8:40 a.m.; the Haven orchestra will play at 9:15 a.m.

In addition, spirit-wear will be on sale and there will be a raffle for prizes. The pancake breakfast is one of two major fundraisers for the Booster Club.

The organization supports all extra-curricular activities at Haven including band, orchestra, drama, the District 65 Middle School Competitive Sports Program, art, and a variety of after-school clubs. For more information, call the school at 847-859-8200.

Kingsley Elementary School
The PTA of Kingsley Elementary School is hosting the 2nd annual Go Green Olympics event, on Saturday Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., in which classmates and their families get active in various sporting events.

Participants will receive a medal for each event attempted promoting active lifestyles. Water and healthy snacks will be provided to fuel energy for “Olympic” events.

“Go green” fund raising will also take place through purchase of organic veggie boxes, recycling ink cartridges, and sneakers as well as other activities that raise awareness and funds for the more than 50 Kingsley events, clubs, and other programs each year.

New to this year’s Olympics is a mini demo session of Pilates provided by a Kingsley parent for classmates and their families. Participants are also invited to bring gently used clothing to be donated to Evanston School Children’s Clothing Association.

Bessie Rhodes Magnet School
Dr. Bessie Rhodes Magnet School PTA is hosting “An Invitation to Conference with Principal Ewing” on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at 7 p.m. Ewing will discuss report cards and conferences for Rhodes families. Parents are invited to bring questions for an informative discussion. For more information, call the school at 847 859-8440.

Willard Elementary School
On Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Willard School hosts its Fall Fest, a event with carnival and sports games, a moonwalk, crafts, food and prizes.

This PTA-sponsored event will take place at the Willard School playground, 2700 Hurd Ave. For more information, contact the school at 847 859-8110.
