Schools to pay for pension screw-up

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 will reimburse the state teacher retirement system for pension overpayments to some teachers who took early retirement.

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 will reimburse the state teacher retirement system for pension overpayments to some teachers who took early retirement.

The teachers say they were encouraged to retire early in 2005 and 2006 because the district told them they could qualify for higher pensions based on credit for extra sick days — an action the retirement board says violates its policies.

The Evanston RoundTable reports the school board agreed to make the payment at an early morning special meeting Friday.

More than 20 retired teachers are affected, and it apparently will cost the district in the neighborhood of $100,000 to cover the repayments the retirement board is demanding.

But the teachers will still be left receiving less in future pension benefits than they’d expected when they retired.
