Funeral services will be held this noon at Second Baptist Church in Evanston for “Brother Mike” Hawkins, who’d joined the nascent youth engagement MetaMedia project at the McGaw YMCA in September.

Hawkins, a poet and educator, died unexpectedly a week ago at the age of 38 in his Rogers Park home. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

He was known for efforts to involve often disengaged young people in creative projects that helped focus them toward successful careers notably at the MacArthur Foundation funded YOUMedia Center at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago.

A spokesman for the McGaw Y said Hawkins will be deeply missed but that his death will not affect the scheduled opening of the MetaMedia center in January.
