Evanston aldermen Tuesday unanimously gave final approval to an ordinance that will add a stop light at Church Street and Sheridan Road.

The light, intended to improve safety for pedestrians walking to the beach, had drawn opposition from some residents along the lakefront.

Alderman Judy Fiske, whose 1st Ward includes the intersection, said she favored the light at the intersection, but she doesn’t want more lights added elsewhere along the lakefront.

Fiske said state law needs to be changed to require drivers to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and that the city should consider lowing the speed limit on Sheridan.
