Evanston police are investigating gunshots fired in the 1600 block of Simpson Street early this evening that hit a car and that they initially believed had injured a man.

Police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan says officers found shell casings on the street and an SUV that had a flat tire caused by a bullet.

Dugan says they also found an intoxicated man nearby in the 1700 block of Payne Street who had an injury to his arm that police initially believed was a gunshot wound.

Update 11:00 p.m.: The injured man, a 23-year-old Evanston resident, was taken to Evanston Hospital were doctors determined his injury wasn’t from a gunshot wound. He’s been treated and releaseed.

Dugan says it’s still not clear what prompted the shooting incident  but detectives are interviewing witnesses and watching video from the area to try n get a better idea of what happend. 

No word yet on any description of the person or persons who may have fired the shots.
