A 42-year-old Skokie man has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon after he was stopped for a traffic violation in Evanston.

Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew says officers on patrol near Dodge Avenue and Mulford Street about 7:45 p.m. Friday saw a white BMW fail to signal for a turn.

After stopping the car in the 400 block of Dodge, Glew says, one of the officers asked the driver, Lanseal Swaby, of 4901 Crain St., if there were any weapons in the vehicle.

Swaby, Glew says, informed the officer that he had a handgun inside a cross body bag that was within the driver’s reach.

The officer then asked Swaby to exit the vehicle and he complied. Glew says the officer then recovered a loaded 9 mm Glock 19 handgun from the bag.

Swaby, Glew says, had a firearm owners ID card but no concealed carry license.

He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and released on a $3,000D bond. He’s due back at the Skokie courthouse at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 16.
