Today, for many, marks the first day of work since Evanston’s smoke-free workplace ordinance went into effect over the weekend.

Under the amended ordinance the City Council adopted in April, smoking is prohibited in all businesses and other workplaces including restaurants, bars and sidewalk cafes.

The ordinance does contain exceptions for private homes, private clubs and retail tobacco stores.

In addition to details on the provisions of the ordinance, the city’s web site has information on quit-smoking classes and sample signs business owners can print out to advise customers of the new rules.

Residents can report violations of the new ordinance by calling 847-866-2952.
