Evanston city officials have declared a snow route parking ban tonight.

That means no parking on posted snow routes on major streets from 11 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning.

City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz says only about three inches of snow has fallen so far and the storm is expected to end by 7 or 8 p.m. — so he says the city likely will not have to put snow emergency parking rules into effect on residential streets for Tuesday and Wednesday.

But the final decision about that will be made later this afternoon.

Public Works currently has 25 trucks on the streets plowing, including garbage trucks to try to clear the roads before rush hour.

With the high snowfall rates and traffic crews are experiencing problems getting through to clear the streets.

Assistant Public Works Director James Maiworm says drivers should expect difficult traveling conditions for this evening’s rush hour.

The City Council is still scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. tonight as planned.
