Owners of the former Evanshire Hotel at 860 Hinman Ave. in Evanston are seeking to convert the last of the building’s rooming units to studio apartments.
They’ll appear before the city’s Design and Project Review Committee this afternoon, asking to add stoves to the 44 units in the 102-unit building that don’t have them now.
That will change their status under the city’s zoning rules from rooming units — commonly referred to as SROs or single-room-occupancy units in other communities — to studio apartment dwelling units. The change would normally require the addition of 44 new parking spaces to the property.

But there’s no room on the building lot for more than the nine existing spaces — so the owners are asking for a waiver of that rule.
The owners say they now have difficulty renting out the units that lack cooking facilities.
