St. A’s kids win at regional science fair


St. Athanasius School in Evanston won the top school award in the poster competition at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Chicago metro regional competition for non-public schools.

The event was held over the weekend at the Museum of Science and Industry.

Forty-eight schools submitted 393 projects in the competition and 39 seventh and eigth grade students from St. A's participated, winning 34 gold and 5 silver medals.
Ten students from St. A's were invited to participate in the State of Illinois Science Fair to be held at Milliken University in Decatur on May 14: They are Ethan Torain, Eleanor Peterson, Eleanor Ward, Mary Henthorn, Gabi Durkin, Stefi Durkin, Emma Powell, Mary Slowinski, Eva Holton and Julia Urban.
Special awards went to the following students:

  • American Association of Zoo Keepers: Ella McDonnell
  • Society of Technical Communication: Gabi Durkin
  • Lincoln Park Zoo: Eva Holton
  • Museum of Science and Industry Top Project Award: Ethan Torain, Eleanor Peterson, Eleanor Ward, Mary Henthorn, Emma Powell, Gabi Durkin, Stefi Durkin, and Eva Holton
  • Tee shirt design: Claire O'Shaughnessy
